Matcha – More Than a Green Latte

Matcha – More Than a Green Latte

Sometimes you discover something new exactly when you’re not looking for it. That’s how it happened in Kupang, when I walked into a little café only to find they didn’t serve coffee. Instead, I was offered a matcha latte with oat milk. It felt almost like life itself was inviting me to try something new. Since then, matcha has become an inseparable part of my days.

🌿 The Origin of Matcha

Matcha comes from Japan and has a centuries-old tradition. The tea plant (Camellia sinensis) is shaded in the final weeks before harvest, allowing the leaves to develop extra chlorophyll and amino acids. This gives them their vibrant green color and rich umami flavor.

After harvesting, the leaves are steamed, dried, and slowly ground between granite stones. What remains is a silky powder: matcha. Unlike regular green tea, you don’t just drink the infusion — you consume the whole leaf. This makes matcha powerful, nourishing, and unique.

🍵 A Ritual of Calm and Presence

In Japan, matcha is at the heart of the tea ceremony. It’s not just about drinking; it’s about creating a moment of stillness. The bamboo whisk, the gentle movements, the aroma, and the frothy layer — all invite mindfulness.

For me, that feeling resonates with life at sea: the connection with nature, the simplicity of the moment, and the conscious experience of what is.

🌱 How to Prepare Matcha

  1. Warm your bowl with hot water and pour it out.
  2. Sift 1–2 teaspoons of matcha powder into the bowl to avoid clumps.
  3. Add 60–80 ml of hot water (around 75–80°C / 170°F).
  4. Whisk in a zig-zag motion until frothy.
  5. Pause, breathe, and sip slowly, setting an intention with each sip.

The preparation itself is a meditation, a moment to return to the body and presence.

💚 Taste and Versatility

Matcha has a distinctive flavor profile: full and creamy, with a hint of bitterness and a touch of natural sweetness. You can drink it straight, or in modern variations such as a latte with oat milk, a smoothie, or even in chocolate.

Matcha chocolate with coconut milk is my latest discovery: tropical and creamy, harmonizing with matcha’s deep, earthy notes. It tastes like East and West meeting in a small piece of joy.

🌟 Health Benefits of Matcha

  • Rich in antioxidants: up to 10 times more than regular green tea.
  • Gentle energy: caffeine paired with L-theanine supports calm alertness.
  • Focus & relaxation: enhances concentration while promoting tranquility.
  • Support for the body: aids metabolism, digestion, and stabilizes blood sugar.

Unlike coffee, which can spike energy then leave you restless, matcha offers steady, gentle vitality. On long days at sea, this balance feels like harmony with the waves.

More Than a Drink

Perhaps my matcha journey began by chance in Kupang, but it has become a ritual that reminds me of simplicity and balance. Whether I make a latte, taste a piece of chocolate, or pause with a bowl of frothy tea, matcha brings me back to the present moment.

And perhaps that is the greatest gift of this green powder: it nourishes the body while making the soul a little greener.

About Me – Pure You

My name is Jacqueline Evers. Through Pure You, I create a space where presence, awareness, and the heart lead the way. I guide people — and myself — back to what is already whole within us: our essence, our rhythm, our inner light.

Writing and sharing these reflections is my way of holding a mirror for others — an invitation to pause, to breathe, and to reconnect with the quiet wisdom inside. Every word is an offering: a gentle reminder that transformation doesn’t have to be loud or forced; it unfolds naturally, when we allow ourselves to simply be.

Through retreats, teachings, and stories, I explore the intersection of body, mind, and spirit — the places where courage meets tenderness, where curiosity opens to understanding, and where self-love becomes a practice of daily life.

Meeting My Spirit Guides – A Journey Within

The workshop began in the most unexpected way. Before we even sat down, Ken started cleaning the room. Not in a rushed or perfunctory way, but with an intent that felt almost ceremonial. Space clearing. Creating an environment where the invisible could become felt. It was as if the walls themselves were exhaling, preparing to hold something sacred.

The Journey Beyond: Exploring the Layers of Consciousness

As a psychotherapist, I’ve spent countless hours helping people untangle the complexities of their inner worlds. I’ve seen the transformative power of this work, and I’m profoundly grateful for the healing it brings. But I’ve also discovered something deeper. A truth that goes beyond therapy and intellectual understanding. When we start from stillness within, from a place of pure consciousness, everything is already okay. There is no need to “fix” ourselves, because at our core, we are already whole. The journey is not about changing who we are; it’s about uncovering and experiencing the truth of our being.

The Swing Above Tegallalang: A Dance of Freedom and Joy

There are moments in life when time seems to stand still, when the world around you fades away and all that remains is a deep connection to the present moment. One such moment unfolded for me on a swing above the rice fields in Tegallalang, Bali—a moment so full of freedom and joy that it felt like I was floating between heaven and earth.
